This week, a major step forward for affordable housing in our region took shape—the Residences at Forest Glen officially opened, bringing 189 brand-new, 100% affordable apartments to the Forest Glen neighborhood, just a short walk from the metro.
Located near the Silver Spring–Wheaton line, this development is the result of a powerful public–private–nonprofit partnership led by Montgomery Housing Partnership (MHP), with major support from Montgomery County, the State of Maryland, and federal housing programs. The $30.8 million County investment, paired with state Low Income Housing Tax Credits (LIHTC), replaced 72 aging units with 189 energy-efficient, amenity-rich homes—all reserved for households earning 60% or less of the area median income (AMI), with nearly a quarter reserved for deeper affordability.
✨ Breakdown of affordability levels:
- 24 units affordable at 30% AMI or below
- 14 units affordable at 40% AMI or below
- 8 units affordable at 50% AMI or below
- 143 units affordable at 60% AMI or below
The Residences at Forest Glen isn’t just about numbers—it’s about what happens when housing is stable and communities stay rooted. At the ribbon-cutting, County Executive Marc Elrich shared why this project matters:
“As a former teacher, I saw what happens to kids when housing isn’t stable... it’s disruptive, it affects learning and it’s hard on families. Projects like this help prevent that kind of displacement.”
📍 Located at 2106 Belvedere Blvd, the 2.6-acre community includes:
- 78 one-bedroom, 82 two-bedroom, and 29 three-bedroom apartments
- A fitness center, community rooms, and a large playground
- Underground parking, bike storage, and easy access to Forest Glen Metro, bus routes, and I-495
It’s a model for what housing can look like when we build with people in mind—transit-accessible, beautifully designed, and affordable for those who need it most.
