Celebrating Valentine’s Day

 in the Silver Spring Arts and Entertainment District 

Whether you are looking for a romantic evening out a restaurant, a Gal-entine’s or Pal-entine’s get together, or a family friendly outing, Silver Spring has a perfect Valentine’s date for you.  With special dining experiences, live performances, comedy and community events, the Silver Spring Arts and Entertainment District offers a wide range of ways to celebrate Valentine’s Week, for planners and last-minute decision makers alike.

Prefer a traditional dinner and a movie date?  Check out the offerings at the historic AFI Silver Theater and Cultural Center. The AFI is showing romantic movie favorites The Way We Were, Punch-Drunk Love and Something’s Gotta Give, along with the new Icelandic arthouse Oscar nominee The Love That Remains.  Or The Majestic Theater is showing Pretty in Pink for its 40th anniversary, Casablanca, Sleepless in Seattle, The Bodyguard, Crazy Rich Asians, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Titanic, a Metropolitan Opera performance of Cinderella and daily screenings of new releases such as Wuthering Heights and other romantic favorites.

If you want a romantic dinner date, the Silver Spring Arts and Entertainment District is home to nearly 150 restaurants offering everything from elegant dining to casual fare and international cuisine. Restaurants throughout downtown are welcoming guests with Valentine’s-themed menus and special dinner offerings during the week. All Set Restaurant & Bar is offering Valentine’s-inspired prix fixe and a “side piece” menu throughout Valentine’s weekend. Matchbox is celebrating Valentine’s Day with heart-shaped brick oven pizzas, specialty cocktails and featured starters. J. Hollinger’s Waterman’s Chophouse is offering a special four-course Valentine’s Day prix-fixe dinner, inviting guests to celebrate the holiday with a thoughtfully curated, multi-course dining experience available throughout the weekend. For a daytime date, The Breakfast Club offers a fabulous brunch and weekday happy hour specials. Menus and reservations vary by restaurant.

Is a drink at a brewery more your style?  Check out the special Valentine’s Day cocktails and shareable flights designed for splitting at Silver Branch Brewing and then easily walk to Third Hill Brewing.

Do you prefer a live performance? Silver Spring has bands, classical music, comedy, theater and more. McGinty’s is hosting a Wednesday night performance by Páraic Keane of the Keane family of Dublin and Irish musician Matt Ward on Wednesday, Feb. 11, at 7 p.m. McGinty’s also is hosting Barco Beat on Valentine’s Day, Saturday, Feb. 14, at 8 p.m., along with a special menu featuring Oysters Rockefeller. The American Legion Post 41 is hosting Loose Ends & Friends with four bands beginning at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 14. The event is open to the community. At The Fillmore Silver Spring, nationally touring artists are joining Valentine’s Week celebrations with live music. Country-pop artist Niko Moon brings his American Palm Tour to the venue on Friday, Feb. 13, at 8 p.m. Pop and R&B artist Jade headlines with her That’s Showbiz Baby! Tour on Sunday, Feb. 15, at 8 p.m.

Pianist Ying Li will appear at Levine Music on Wednesday, Feb. 11, at 7 p.m., for a special engagement featuring a free live performance, master class and audience Q&A as part of Levine’s partnership with Young Concert Artists.  The Bettie Mae Kramer Gallery is hosting a jazz performance by vocalist Linda Harris and pianist Pete Frassrand on Wednesday, Feb. 11, at 6:30 p.m. Montgomery College Cultural Arts Center presents Skye Consort with Emma Björling on Friday, Feb. 13, at 7:30 p.m. The concert features a blend of global and early music and offers a sophisticated cultural outing during Valentine’s Week.

For a magical night out for adults, Smokus Pocus  is a comedy and variety show for adults on Friday, Feb. 13, at 8 p.m., offering a playful, high-energy live performance that makes for a fun and unconventional Valentine’s date.  Enjoy an Improbably Comedy Sweet & Sour Valentine’s Day Comedy Show on Saturday, Feb. 14, at 7:30 p.m. at the Silver Spring Black Box Theatre. 

Looking for a meaningful shared experience to connect with your partner? Live Garra Theatre is presenting Voice of the Human Living Experience on Sunday, Feb. 15, at 4 p.m. at the Silver Spring Black Box Theatre. The playback theatre performance is built around real stories shared by audience members and focuses on themes of identity, bias and belonging.

For family entertainment celebrating Valentine’s Day, try these creative offerings including dance, arts, and options for all ages.  Cut a rug at the Family Valentine’s Dance at the Silver Spring Aquatic and Recreation Center on Sunday, Feb. 15, from 3 to 5 p.m. Maryland Youth Ballet is hosting part of its Black History Month Dance Celebration with a free Umfundalai dance class on Friday, Feb. 13, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., featuring contemporary African dance techniques taught by Miriah Auth. Maryland Youth Ballet also is offering a free pilates class on Sunday, Feb. 15, at 9:30 a.m. Dance lovers can also celebrate Valentine’s Day with a free performance by Akhmedova Ballet Academy, on Saturday, Feb. 14, at 1 p.m. at the Schweinhaut Senior Center.

For a creative date, Create Arts Center is offering a Creative Pouring: Evening Bliss workshop on Friday, Feb. 13, at 6 p.m. The hands-on workshop guides participants through the process of fluid painting and is designed as a relaxed, social experience for adults and couples.

Are you really last minute and haven’t made any plans at all?  Take a self guided public art walk around Silver Spring and chart your own path to over 50 pieces of public art.  The outdoor ice skating rink at Veterans Plaza is open open seven days a week in the day and the nighttime, perfect for a last minute date. Couples Skate at Veterans Plaza or hold hands with your child and enjoy the music and colored light canopy at night.  Other family or last minute entertainment locations with daily offerings during Valentine’s weekend include puzzle rooms at  The Big Escape Room Silver Spring, a splash pad at the Silver Spring Recreation and Aquatic Center, and arcade and games at Dave and Busters Silver Spring.
