We are thrilled to share that Afro-Cuban jazz legend Chucho Valdés Quartet will be headlining the free 20th Annual Silver Spring Jazz Festival on Saturday, Sept. 7. Known for his incredible talent as a pianist, bandleader, composer, and arranger, Mr. Valdés has garnered seven GRAMMY Awards, six Latin GRAMMY Awards, and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Latin Recording Academy. The festival will take place from 3-10 p.m. at Veteran’s Plaza in Silver Spring, with the Chucho Valdés Quartet set to perform at 8:30 p.m.
As County Executive Marc Elrich beautifully put it, “The 20th Annual Silver Spring Jazz Festival is one of our County’s most beloved events, showcasing our vibrant cultural landscape and deep commitment to the arts. Jazz has been a cornerstone of our nation's cultural diversity and a pillar of music education that bridges generations. Welcoming a legendary figure like Chucho Valdés, whose contributions to Afro-Cuban jazz have profoundly influenced the genre, highlights the festival's importance and our dedication to honoring the legacy and evolution of jazz music. This event is an opportunity to appreciate the rich tapestry of musical heritage that brings us all together.”
Mr. Valdés has had a remarkable career spanning over 60 years, continuously pushing the boundaries of Afro-Cuban music and setting a high standard for younger generations. Alongside his performance, we’re excited to feature a lineup that includes D.C.-based Ethio-Jazz Feedel Band, The Eric Byrd Trio, Todd Marcus Quintet, Dupont Brass, Paul Carr and the Real Jazz Ambassadors, and Marcus Johnson, a founding committee member of the festival. Let’s come together and enjoy an unforgettable day of music, culture, and community!
