The Silver Spring Recreation and Aquatic Center (SSRAC) recently hosted a special event to celebrate the unveiling of a statue in honor of Olympic gymnast Dominique Dawes. This event coincides perfectly with the Olympic Games, highlighting Dawes' remarkable achievements and her lasting impact on the community. Dawes, who has competed in and medaled at three Olympic Games, expressed her gratitude and hope that the statue will inspire future generations to strive for excellence.

Dominique Dawes, a native of Montgomery County and the first Black woman on the U.S. gymnastics team, has significantly contributed to the sport and her community. As a three-time Olympic medalist and owner of the Dominique Dawes Gymnastics and Ninja Academies, she continues to foster a healthy and compassionate culture in gymnastics. The statue, created by sculptor Brian Hanlon, stands as a testament to her dedication and positive influence. The SSRAC event emphasized Dawes' ongoing commitment to youth development and community service, making her a true role model and inspiration for all.
