Montgomery County has announced that the legendary Preservation Hall Jazz Band will headline the free Silver Spring Jazz Festival on Saturday, Sept. 6. The Preservation Hall Jazz Band is recognized nationally for preserving and promoting traditional New Orleans jazz and is a past recipient of the National Medal of Arts. The festival will run from 3 to 10 p.m. at Veterans Plaza, located at One Veterans Place in Silver Spring.  Preservation Hall Jazz Band is scheduled to take the stage at 8:30 p.m.

Founded in 1961 in the heart of New Orleans’ French Quarter, Preservation Hall Jazz Band has served as a torchbearer of traditional New Orleans jazz for more than six decades. While deeply rooted in New Orleans’ rich musical heritage, the band continues to evolve—incorporating Afro-Cuban rhythms and modern jazz influences—ensuring the genre’s relevance for new generations. Their performances offer a vibrant blend of history and innovation that captivates audiences around the world.

Preservation Hall and Preservation Hall Jazz Band have been cultural icons in New Orleans since the 1960s. Their dedication to preserving and elevating traditional jazz has made a lasting impact on American music and has helped establish the New Orleans jazz sound as a defining voice of the art form.

“The Silver Spring Jazz Festival brings people together, supports our local arts scene and makes world-class music accessible to everyone,” said County Executive Marc Elrich. “I’m happy to welcome the Preservation Hall Jazz Band to Montgomery County for this year’s Silver Spring Jazz Festival. As any jazz fan knows, this is a group that represents the heart and soul of American music. Having them perform here is something special. I hope people from across the County and the region come out to enjoy a great day of music in downtown Silver Spring.”

The Silver Spring Jazz Festival is one of the region’s premier music events, attracting thousands of attendees each year. In addition to the headlining performance by Preservation Hall Jazz Band, the festival will feature a diverse lineup of local and national jazz artists, food vendors, a beer garden and family-friendly activities.

The Silver Spring Arts & Entertainment District, home to the festival, is surrounded by international and American restaurants. On-site amenities during the festival will include restrooms, first aid and other services.

Attendees are encouraged to use public transportation and bring blankets or low-back lawn chairs for seating. The festival is a short walk from the Silver Spring Metro Station on the Red Line.
