Downtown Silver Spring is becoming safer—and the numbers back it up.

According to a new report from the Montgomery County Police Department (MCPD), and highlighted by Montgomery Community Media (MCM), overall crime dropped 8% in 2025 compared to 2024, with notable decreases across several major categories.

  • Gun-related assaults ↓ 53%
  • Carjackings ↓ 35%
  • Theft of auto parts ↓ 34%
  • Auto theft ↓ 16%
  • Robberies ↓ 9.6%
  • Property crimes overall ↓ 13%
  • And more

But beyond the statistics, the impact is being felt across the community. Local leaders report fewer complaints and a noticeable sense of calm, signs that progress is not just measurable, but visible.

MCPD leadership credits increased patrols, focused enforcement, and strong collaboration with businesses and community partners. Initiatives addressing retail theft, car rallies, and transit-area safety have all contributed to the downward trend.

“Public safety is a shared effort, and we will continue working with our community and business partners to keep Silver Spring safe,” said Marc Yamada.

Third District Commander Jason Cokinos added, “Crime can’t be eliminated entirely, but our goal is always to reduce it wherever and whenever we can… When we work together, we can make a real difference.”

While the progress is promising, officials emphasize that the work continues. Ongoing partnership between MCPD, The Silver Spring Urban District, local organizations, and the business community remains key to sustaining a safer, more vibrant Downtown Silver Spring.
