In an early-career role in this rarely seen crime thriller, Marcello Mastroianni stars as Marcello Curti, a young man from a well-to-do family who moonlights as a money launderer, acting as a go-between for various mafia clans and his fellow villagers. When he is left alone at the scene of a murder and becomes a prime suspect, Curti must fight to prove his innocence and bring the true perpetrator to justice. One of several films that Mastroianni made during the 1950s before he shot to international fame following Mario Monicelli’s BIG DEAL ON MADONNA STREET (1958) and Federico Fellini’s LA DOLCE VITA (1960), AGAINST THE LAW is an undiscovered gem that marks the young actor’s first major role and demonstrates his clear talents as a leading man. DIR/SCR Flavio Calzavara; SCR Giuseppe Mangione, Guglielmo Santangelo; PROD Giorgio Carini. Italy, 1950, b&w, 99 min. In Italian with English subtitles. NOT RATED
