4K Restoration | Intro by film historian Sheila O’Malley
In a rugged mountain outpost, backwoods tomboy Salomy Jane (Joan Bennett) comes of age while fending off a trio of predatory men — a lecherous politician, a grasping rancher and a too-slick gambler. Her fate shifts when, during a moonlight swim, she encounters a mysterious stranger (Charles Farrell), newly arrived with vengeance on his mind. The film was shot in beautiful locations throughout Sequoia National Park. Richard Brody, film critic for the New Yorker, praised how director Raoul Walsh’s “richly textured populist panorama, with its simmering feuds, casual gunplay and corrupt local politics, along with the shoddy justice of vigilante mobs, blends the comic hyperbole of long-ago tall tales, homespun sentimental charm and the tense spectacle of life and death in the daily balance.”
