Contract and Clearances in Documentary Filmmaking (Virtual)

October 1, 2026 | Online 7:00-8:30pm

A Zoom link will be shared via email 24 hours in advance

ABOUT THIS WORKSHOP

Producing a documentary requires creative, editorial, logistical, and legal planning. From the earliest stages of development through production, post-production, and distribution, every project relies on contracts, permissions, and clearances that protect your work and help prepare it for audiences.

This workshop provides an overview of the key contracts and clearances documentary filmmakers are likely to encounter, from development through release. Topics include crew and co-producer agreements, appearance and interview releases, life rights versus interview permissions, location releases for public and private spaces, the use of archival footage and photographs, Errors & Omissions (E&O) insurance, and legal considerations that can affect festival, broadcast, and streaming distribution. Participants will gain a practical understanding of the documentation needed to keep their projects moving forward with confidence.
