About

“When I cast my mind back to that summer of 1936 different kinds of memories offer themselves to me.” With these opening lines, Michael Mundy launches us into a poignant, poetic exploration of memory, longing, and change in the small Irish town of Ballybeg.
Winner of numerous awards including the Tony and the Olivier awards for Best Play, Brian Friel’s Dancing at Lughnasa tells the story of the five Mundy sisters, seen through the eyes of the seven year old son they are raising together. We meet them duringLughnasa, an ancient harvest festival, when an old lover comes back to town, their older brother has returned after 25 years living as a missionary in Uganda, and the Mundy women have spent their hard earned savings on a radio. Both haunting and hilarious, Dancing at Lughnasa is a celebration of the pain, commitment, and joy that connects us to our families. As Irish dance music drifts from the aul’ radio, you’ll be transported to a misty world of dreams and dancing in this bewitching memory play. Come see the show that The New York Times praised for its “overwhelming power,” beloved by audiences around the world for three decades!
