FOOTLIGHT PARADE
After making a slew of gangster pictures, James Cagney finally got to show off his footwork in this rousing pre-Code musical, an Art Deco-inspired extravaganza famous for Busby Berkeley’s “By a Waterfall” swimming pool number. Cagney plays Chester Kent, the hardworking creator and choreographer of spectacular musical prologues that serve as the pre-show entertainment for big-city movie palaces. Joan Blondell shines as his faithful secretary, with Ruby Keeler and Dick Powell as his star dancers. Look for an unbilled Dorothy Lamour and Ann Sothern in the chorus. DIR Lloyd Bacon; SCR Manuel Seff, James Seymour. U.S., 1933, b&w, 103 min. RATED G

PAGE MISS GLORY (1936)
The first color cartoon and first Merrie Melodie directed by an uncredited Fred “Tex” Avery, PAGE MISS GLORY was inspired by the 1935 feature film of the same name and features the Moderne designs of artist Leadora Congdon, the only member of the creative team, besides composers Harry Warren and Al Dubin, who appears in the film’s credits. While the rural town of Hicksville anticipates the arrival of one Miss Glory, the bellhop at her modest hotel falls asleep and dreams of paging her at a luxurious Art Deco hotel. DIR Fred Avery; PROD Leon Schlesinger. U.S., 1936, color, 8 min. NOT RATED
