Derek Jarman’s final and most daring film premiered at the Venice Film Festival just four months before the artist’s death from AIDS-related complications which had rendered him partially blind. BLUE, whose title and striking monochrome image were inspired by the vivid flashes of blue caused by the lesions in Jarman’s eyes, is a daring cinematic work that finds the iconoclastic artist laying bare his physical and spiritual state as he poignantly narrates his experience with the virus while also reflecting on his life. At moments, the narration is picked up by friends and colleagues — John Quentin, Nigel Terry, Tilda Swinton — while a sonorous soundscape incorporating music by Brian Eno, Erik Satie and Coil pulsates in the background. The result is a deeply personal and elegiac film from an exceptional, multi-talented artist.
