When a rich merchant decides to escape London to avoid the plague, he leaves his house
in the hands of his butler, Jeremy. Spotting a golden opportunity, Jeremy recruits two of
his sketchy associates, the smooth-talking Subtle and the feisty Dol Common, and the trio
embark upon a highly lucrative scam in which they convince a series of rich and gullible
dupes that they are skilled ‘alchemists’ with the ability to turn ordinary metals into gold.
Their greedy victims are easily cheated, and the cunning threesome quickly amass a small
fortune, confident that nothing can go wrong. But while they are busy predicting others’
fortunes, they fail to foretell what’s in store for themselves...
With a near-catastrophic explosion, a series of ridiculous disguises and a timely
appearance from the Queen of the Fairies, Ben Jonson’s hilarious farce is truly one of the
great English comedies, as entertaining today as it was four centuries ago.
