Documentary projects can generate years of footage across different cameras, drives, locations, and collaborators. Without a clear system, media can quickly become difficult to track, back up, share, and hand off.

This workshop teaches documentary filmmakers how to build a clean, sustainable organizational structure for their projects. We’ll cover folder and drive organization, naming conventions, camera originals, audio, proxies, project files, working media, exports, backups and checksum verification, as well as how to keep the system clear when working with different editing platforms and collaborators.

Intended audience: Beginner to intermediate documentary filmmakers, especially those working independently or in small teams and managing their own media and post-production.

Key learning outcomes: Participants will learn how to organize a documentary from the start, safely manage and back up original media, understand where proxies and other working files belong, create consistent naming and folder conventions, and build a structure that remains easy to navigate, relink, share, and hand off as the project grows.

The session will combine instruction, real-world examples, and a hands-on exercise where participants build or evaluate an organizational structure for a documentary project.

A Zoom link will be shared via email 24 hours in advance.
