National Preparedness Month (NPM) is a nationwide initiative observed each September that promotes community readiness through education and engagement. The campaign highlights five key steps to preparedness: understanding your risks and staying informed, building a support network, creating a plan, assembling an emergency kit, and getting involved in your community.

To support this initiative, Montgomery County OEMHS will launch a community survey as part of its efforts. The survey is designed not only to provide residents with preparedness information, but also to gather direct feedback on how the office can enhance its outreach materials, presentations, and digital preparedness resources. This input will help ensure that residents feel informed, supported, and empowered to act before, during, and after emergencies.

To promote the survey and preparedness education throughout September, emergency management staff will attend over 40 partner-hosted gatherings and pop-up information tables in neighborhoods across Montgomery County. These events will provide us with opportunities to gather survey responses, share preparedness information, and strengthen connections across Montgomery County’s diverse communities.

Finally, to further amplify outreach efforts, the office will launch a social media campaign throughout September. Each week, the campaign will highlight one of the five preparedness steps, offering residents practical guidance to become more prepared and resilient. There will also be updates on the office’s weekly locations and events, ensuring the community knows where they can meet staff, ask questions, and learn more about emergency preparedness. Residents are encouraged to follow OEMHS on Facebook, X, Instagram, and NextDoor.
