40th Anniversary | Intro by film historian Foster Hirsch

Saxophonist Dale Turner (played by real-life jazz giant Dexter Gordon) battles alcoholism and drug addiction in ‘50s Paris, but is befriended and saved by Gallic groupie Francis Borier (François Cluzet). But what happens to their friendship if Turner goes back to America? This fictionalized telling of the friendship between bebop pianist Bud Powell and a French fan won composer Herbie Hancock an Academy Award® for Best Score and netted Dexter Gordon a Best Actor nomination for his only starring role.
