Playa Azul is a coastal village that exists in an almost liminal space: As the years come and go, the nearby river and sea levels rise, flooding the homes in the village until the waters recede once more. At first following the children in the community, director Álvaro Torres Crespo’s camera becomes self-reflexive as his subjects grow more comfortable and ask to see the footage of themselves. With greater confidence in being recorded, matriarch Yesenia begins to bare her soul, revealing a life whose ebb and flow is deeply linked to the shifting shores she calls her home.
