100th Anniversary | Live musical accompaniment by Ben Model
An escaped convict surfaces in Tatesville, Georgia, where he passes himself off to the local populace as Rev. Isaiah T. Jenkins and sets about bilking the congregation of their hard-earned money. Paul Robeson is magnetic in his screen debut — the only film he made with pioneering independent filmmaker Oscar Micheaux. Robeson plays the dual role of the phony preacher and his long-lost twin brother, Sylvester, with whom he vies for the affections of an impressionable young congregant named Isabelle.
