Owen Kline made an auspicious debut as a filmmaker with this quirky and blackly comic coming-of-age tale. Traumatized by a brush with death and alienated by a brush with the law, New Jersey teenager Robert (Daniel Zolghadri) informs his parents (Josh Pais and Maria Dizzia) that he wants to drop out of school and focus on becoming a great comic artist. He finds a cheap place to live in a frighteningly dank group house in Trenton, part-time employment with his public defender and a problematic mentor in the form of Wallace (Matthew Maher), a prickly crank who once worked as a professional comic artist. Kline's love for comic book art shines through, as does an awareness that genuine underground and outsider art does not come from corporate workplaces or well-adjusted people. Impressively grotesque and subversively comedic, FUNNY PAGES perfectly captures the world it depicts in loving caricature.
